Relais Christine Hotel: History with a Mystery on the Left Bank

A stay at the Relais Christine Hotel is more than just a night in Paris; its a time travel experience to several centuries of Parisian history. Built on the foundations of an ancient medieval monastery, the 17th century hotel architecture is one of the historic building styles in Paris.  Situated on the Rue Christine in the midst of the busy Left Bank, you are quietly secluded from the main bustle of the St. Germain area.

The central feature of the hotel is the garden and greenery that captures the romance of the 17th and 18th century in Paris. With comfortably designed rooms that also have elegant and chic appointments created by interior designers the antique furnishings, silk drapes and window coverings carefully hide all modern technologies.  A cozy bar area off the lobby with a lighted fire greets you as you enter; the wall of famous “personalities” by French artists whose faces you will no doubt recognise from museums around the world also creates the feeling if a welcoming home. La Boheme Chic” is what characterises this hotel as well as the unique gardens on the property that allow you to escape from the noise of Paris and feel like you are staying in a chateaux or country home. The side street, the Rue Christine is perfectly located on the Left Bank and a quiet side street that keeps that hum and scream of traffic from its door.

The Relais Christine Monastic Past

The hotel also has secrets below the property….a cave of luxury beauty and relaxation awaits you as well. The ‘Relais Christine’ was built on the top of a medieval foundation of stone in the 1600s. I have always wanted to know its secrets and so I learned that the Relais Christine was a 16th-century residence that was built on the ruins of the Austin Friars monastery, founded in 1231 by Saint Louis. With its unique garden “carriage” entrance, and central courtyard you are truly taking a step back in time.  This kind of plan was often used for hotels during the 17th and 18th centuries and only a few of these properties exist today, such as the Hotel Jussieu on the Quai Bourbon, now a private residence and a few others in Paris built in this same period.

A spa, exercise room and breakfast room offer guests a full service hotel that has four stars.

The Spa at Relais Christine is now exclusively a GUERLAIN spa with the products from this classic French luxury brand used throughout the Spa Experience. Your Spa booking is suggested well in advance of your visit. Click Here for your appointment.
